আটলান্টিকসংবাদ ডেস্ক: গত ২৩ সেপ্টেম্বর,২০২৬ বুধবার আটলান্টিক সিটির টেক্সাস এভিনিউর পার্কের একাংশে স্থায়ীভাবে নির্মীত শহীদ মিনারের উদ্বোধন করা হয়েছে। আটলান্টিক সিটির মেয়র মার্টি স্মল, আটলান্টিক সিটির ৪র্থ ওয়ার্ডের কাউন্সিলম্যান জর্জ কাউছ এবং সিটির মাল্টিকালচারাল ডিপার্টমেন্টের সার্বিক সহযোগিতায় সিটিতে এই শহীদ মিনার নির্মীত হয়।
আটলান্টিক সিটির চতুর্থ ওয়ার্ডের টেক্সাস এভিনিউ পার্কে স্থায়ীভাবে নির্মাণ করা হয়েছে বাংলাদেশীদের গর্বের ও ভাষা সংগ্রামের স্মৃতি বিজড়িত ঐতিহাসিক শহীদ মিনার। বিকেল পাঁচটায় আটলান্টিক সিটির মেয়র মাটি স্মল জুনিয়ার ফিতা কেটে শহীদ মিনার উদ্বোধন করার কথা থাকলেও ব্যক্তিগত কারণ দেখিয়ে উপস্থিত না থাকায় ওই ওয়ার্ডের নির্বাচিত কাউন্সিলম্যান জর্জ এনিম্যাল ক্রাউজ এবং গুনীজন বিশ্বনাথ চৌধুরী কিছু সংখ্যক বাংলাদেশীদেরকে নিয়ে ফিতা কেটে উদ্বোধন করেন।
এরপরে কাউন্সিল ম্যানের পরিচালনায় সংক্ষিপ্ত আলোচনা সভা অনুষ্ঠিত হয়। এতে স্থানীয় বিভিন্ন সংগঠনের নেতৃবৃন্দ উপস্থিত থাকলেও পূর্বে পরিকল্পিতভাবে উদ্দেশ্য প্রনোধিতভাবে স্থানীয় দুটি সংগঠনের কর্মকর্তা ও সিটি হলে কর্মরত মালটি কালচার ডিপার্টমেন্টের কর্মকর্তা বাংলাদেশী বংশোদ্ভুত জনাব মিল্টন চৌধুরী, সকল বাংলাদেশী সংগঠন ও তাদের নেতৃবৃন্দদেরকে পাশ কাটিয়ে মাত্র দুটি সংগঠন ও তাদের সভাপতি দেরকে আলোচনায় আমন্ত্রণ জানিয়ে উদ্বোধনী অনুষ্ঠান শেষ করতে চাইলে আটলান্টিক সিটির প্রবীণতম সংগঠন বেঙ্গল ক্লাবের প্রায় অর্থশত নেতাকর্মী তার জোরালো প্রতিবাদ করে।
এক পর্যায়ে পরিস্থিতি নিয়ন্ত্রণের বাইরে চলে গেলে ওই দুই সংগঠনের সভাপতিদয়কে কর্মীদের সাহায্যে সভাস্থল ত্যাগ করতে দেখা যায় এবং পরিস্থিতি নিয়ন্ত্রণের জন্য উপস্থিত পুলিশ প্রশাসনকে আকুতি জানিয়ে নিয়ন্ত্রণের অনুরোধ জানায় এক পর্যায়ে পুলিশ খানিকটা নিয়ন্ত্রণে এনে অনুষ্ঠান সমাপ্ত করতে সাহায্য করে।
অন্যদিকে কার্যক্রমের মাঝপথে দাঁড়িয়ে হ্যান্ড মাইক দিয়ে একটি সংগঠনের সভাপতিকে উদ্দেশ্য করে রাজাকার, বেইমান, গুপ্ত রাজাকার, সংগঠন ধ্বংসকারী, কমিউনিটির কিলিকবাজ বলে গালি দিতে শোনা যায়, এগুলি অশ্লীল বা কটু বাক্য হলেও অনেকেই মনে করে তার বিগত দিনের কর্মকান্ডের জন্য এই গালিগালাজ অতি সামান্য এবং যিনি এগুলি পরিবেশন করেছেন অনেককেই তাকে সমর্থন ও ধন্যবাদ জ্ঞাপন করতে শোনা যায়।
উদ্বোধনী অনুষ্ঠানে বিশিষ্টজন এর মধ্যে উপস্থিত ছিলেন সিটির পুলিশ চীপ জিম সার্কাস, ডেপুটি চীপ লেখজি জেলিনজার,কাউন্সলিম্যান কলিম শাহবাজ, কাঊন্সিল ওয়াম্যান মারিয়া লাক্কা, কাউন্সিল এট লারজ সোহেল আহমেদ, প্রাক্তন কাউন্সলম্যান আনজুম জিয়া বাংলাদেশ প্রেসক্লাব অব আটলান্টিক সিটির সভাপতি বিশিষ্ট সাংবাদিক ও সমাজসেবক আকবর হোসেন, আটলান্টিক সিটি স্কুল বোর্ডের নির্বাচিত সদস্য সাংবাদিক সুব্রত চৌধুরী, সিটি স্কুল বোর্ডের নির্বাচিত সদস্য ফরহাদ সিদ্দিকী, বাংলাদেশ এসোসিয়েশন অফ সাউথ জার্সির সভাপতি মোহাম্মদ জহিরুল ইসলাম বাবুল, সাধারণ সম্পাদক জাকিরুল ইসলাম খোকা, বেঙ্গল ক্লাবের ভারপ্রাপ্ত সভাপতি আরিফ মাহমুদ লিমন,প্রাক্তন ভারপ্রাপ্ত সভাপতি মোহাম্মদ আলী, সাধারণ সম্পাদক বাংলাদেশী কমিউনিটির বিপ্লবী কণ্ঠস্বর কাজল বাড়ুই, আটলান্টিক সিটি বাংলাদেশ আমেরিকান লায়ন্স ক্লাবের সভাপতি মোঃ রহমান বাবুল, বাংলাদেশ এসোসিয়েশন অফ আটলান্টিক কাউন্ট্রির সভাপতি মোঃ শহিদ খান, চটগ্রাম বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় মাষ্টার্স এলামনাই এসোসিয়েশনের সভাপতি জাহাঙ্গীর হোসেন ভূইয়া এবং সাধারণ সম্পাদক কাজী লিটন, বেঙ্গল ক্লাবের অন্যতম নেতা আজিজুল ইসলাম ফেরদৌস,মরির হোসেন,মোঃ হেলাল,জয়দেব কর্মকার, লিখন কাজী আনিসুর রহমান জুয়েল,বাদল, আবুল আজাদ মিঠু, সামিউল গহর, জামান,এম আই কায়সার,আসিফ আনোয়ার,মৃদুল চক্রবর্তী, শহিদুল ইসলাম পিংকি,সাঈদ দোহা এবং এশিয়ান আমেরিকান সোসাইটির সভাপতি ও বাংলাদেশ প্রেসক্লাব অব আটলান্টিক সিটির সাধারণ সম্পাদক সাংবাদিক মোহাম্মদ শাহিন। উল্লেখ্য কমিউনিটির বিশিষ্টজনদেরকে সাথে নিয়ে সকলের সহযোগিতায় ফিতা কেটে উদ্বোধন করার জন্য আটলান্টিক সিটির তিনজন সাংবাদিক সকল প্রকার প্রচেষ্ঠা চালিয়ে ছিলেন। উদ্বোধনী অনুষ্ঠানে জাতীয় সংগীত পরিবেশন, ভাষা শহীদদের প্রতি শ্রদ্ধা জানিয়ে নীরবতা পালন এবং শহীদ মিনারের বেদিতে পুষ্পস্তবক অর্পণসহ সকল প্রকার নিয়মাবলী রক্ষা করে যেখানে আমরা যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের মাটিতে নিজেদের দেশকে তথা পুরো জাতিকে বিদেশীদের কাছে সন্মানজনকভাবে তুলে ধরতে পারতাম তা না হয়ে
কলংকিত অধ্যায়ের মধ্য দিয়ে শহীদ মিনারের উদ্বোধনী অনুষ্ঠান সম্পন্ন হয়।উপস্থিত প্রায় শতাধিক বাংলাদেশী এই অনভিপ্রেত ঘটনার জন্য কয়েকজন তথাকথিত অদুরদর্শী নেতৃবৃন্দের কুতসিৎ চিন্তাধারার কথা উল্লখে করে এর তীব্র নিন্দা জানান।
প্রায় ১০,০০০ ডলার ব্যয়ে নির্মীত শহীদ মিনারের নির্মান ব্যয়ের সহযোগিতা করেন ডাকটাঊন নেইবারহোড কমিউনিটি ডেবলাপমেন্ট কর্পোরেশন। ডাকটাউন সিডিসি হলো আমেরিকার নিউ জার্সি অঙ্গরাজ্যের অ্যাটলান্টিক সিটির একটি অলাভজনক সামাজিক উন্নয়ন সংস্থা। ২০১৮ সালে স্থানীয় সচেতন বাসিন্দা ও ব্যবসায়ীদের হাত ধরে এর সূচনা হয় এবং ২০২০ সালে এটি আনুষ্ঠানিকভাবে একটি নন-প্রফিট সংস্থা হিসেবে আত্মপ্রকাশ করে। ডাকটাউন সিডিসির এই উদ্যোগ সিটিতে বসবাসরত কয়েক হাজার বাংলাদেশীর দীর্ঘদিনের প্রচেষ্ঠার অংশবিশেষ। এই সংগঠনটির বোর্ড অব ট্রাষ্টির সভাপতি মাইকেল কগনো তার উদ্ভোধনী বক্তব্যে ১৯৫২ বাংলা ভাষার জন্য যারা প্রান দিয়েছিলন তাদেরকে গভীরভাবে স্বরণ করেন এবং বলেন ভাষার জন্য প্রানদানকারী শহীদদের জন্য শহীদ মিনার নির্মান করতে পেরে আমরা নিজেরাও গর্বিত।হাজারো বাংলাদেশীর প্রশ্ন আটলান্টিক সিটিসহ সমগ্র যুক্তরাষ্ট্রে আমরা তিনযুগ পরেও শহীদ মিনার উদ্বোধন করতে এসে ঝগড়া বিবাদে লিপ্ত হই আর কত যুগ পরে আমরা আসলে মানুষ হবো।
AtlanticSangbad Desk: A permanent Shaheed Minar (Martyrs’ Monument) was inaugurated on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, in a section of the park on Texas Avenue in Atlantic City. The monument was constructed with the overall cooperation of Atlantic City Mayor Marty Small, 4th Ward Councilman George Crouch, and the city’s Multicultural Department. A permanent *Shaheed Minar*—a historic monument symbolizing the pride of the Bangladeshi community and commemorating the Language Movement—has been constructed at Texas Avenue Park in Atlantic City’s Fourth Ward. Although Atlantic City Mayor Marty Small Jr. was scheduled to inaugurate the monument by cutting the ribbon at 5:00 PM, he was unable to attend due to personal reasons; consequently, the ward’s elected Councilman George “Animal” Crouch and distinguished community member Bishwanath Chowdhury performed the inauguration ceremony alongside a group of Bangladeshi residents. Subsequently, a brief discussion meeting was held under the moderation of Councilman George Kauch.Leaders from various local organizations were present; however, officials from two local organizations and Mr. Milton Chowdhury—a City Hall Multicultural Department official of Bangladeshi descent—had pre-planned and deliberately prevented all Bangladeshi organizations and their leaders from delivering speeches. When an attempt was made to conclude the inaugural ceremony after inviting only two organizations and their presidents to the discussion, nearly fifty members and office-bearers of the Bengal Club—Atlantic City’s oldest organization—voiced strong protests. When the situation spiraled out of control, the presidents of the two organizations were seen leaving the venue with the help of their activists; they also pleaded with the police present to bring the situation under control. Eventually, the police managed to restore some order and assisted in concluding the event.
On the other hand, midway through the proceedings, a person was heard using a handheld microphone to hurl insults at an organization’s president—calling him a *Razakar*, a traitor, a covert *Razakar*, a destroyer of the organization, and a community troublemaker. Although these are obscene or harsh epithets, many feel that such verbal abuse is trivial compared to the individual’s past actions; indeed, many were heard supporting and thanking the person who voiced these accusations. Distinguished guests present at the inaugural ceremony included City Police Chief Jim Sarkos, Deputy Chief Lekhchi Zelinger, Councilman Kaleem Shabazz, Councilwoman Maria Lacca, Council-at-Large Sohel Ahmed, former Councilman Anjum Zia, President of the Bangladesh Press Club of Atlantic City (and prominent journalist and social worker) Akbar Hossain, Atlantic City School Board member (and journalist) Subrata Chowdhury, and Atlantic City School Board member Farhad Siddiqui. Mohammad Jahirul Islam Babul, President of the Bangladesh Association of South Jersey; Zakirul Islam Khoka, General Secretary; Arif Mahmud Limon, Acting President of the Bengal Club; Mohammad Ali, former Acting President; Kajol Barai, General Secretary and a revolutionary voice of the Bangladeshi community; Md. Rahman Babul, President of the Atlantic City Bangladesh American Lions Club; and Md. Shahid Khan, President of the Bangladesh Association of Atlantic County. Jahangir Hossain Bhuiyan and Kazi Liton, President and General Secretary respectively of the Chittagong University Masters Alumni Association; Azizul Islam Ferdous (a key leader of the Bengal Club), Monir Hossain,Helal Hasan, Joydeb Karmakar, Likhan, Kazi Anisur Rahman Jewel, Badal, Abul Azad Mithu, Samiul Gahar, Zaman, M.I. Kaiser, Asif Anwar, Mridul Chakraborty, Shahidul Islam Pinky, and Sayeed Doha; as well as journalist Mohammad Shahin, President of the Asian American Society and General Secretary of the Bangladesh Press Club of Atlantic City.
It is worth noting that three journalists from Atlantic City made every effort to organize the ribbon-cutting inauguration with the cooperation of everyone, including prominent members of the community. The approximately one hundred Bangladeshis present strongly condemned this unfortunate incident, attributing it to the vile mindset of a few so-called shortsighted leaders.
The Ducktown Neighborhood Community Development Corporation (Ducktown CDC) provided financial support for the construction of the Shaheed Minar, a project costing approximately $10,000. Ducktown CDC is a non-profit community development organization based in Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA. It was initiated in 2018 through the efforts of socially conscious local residents and business owners and was formally established as a non-profit organization in 2020. This initiative by the Ducktown CDC is part of the long-standing efforts of the thousands of Bangladeshis living in the city. In his opening remarks, Michael Cogno, President of the organization’s Board of Trustees, paid deep tribute to those who sacrificed their lives for the Bangla language in 1952.
